STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

WHO THEY ARE

MALLORY MAYNARD

10TH GRADE

"Last summer, I started to chalk in my driveway for something to do. My brother and I decided to have a contest one afternoon to see who could draw sponge bob the best. After we did that I realized maybe I could draw some pictures that where actually good. When summer started this year I decided to do some more out in my driveway. I saw a video of someone doing chalk and realized they were using soft pastels to get a brighter outcome. I decided to save up some money and buy some soft pastels for myself. I started practicing some different techniques from using just my fingers to adding in water. I found adding the water made it so you couldn't see the concrete through which made it look much smoother in the end. A few weeks ago I entered my first chalk walk in downtown Oshkosh, unfortunately it ended up raining and I wasn't able to complete my picture. Many people came up to me complimenting and asking about my drawing. In the end I ended up getting second place with my drawing of Mufasa and Simba from the lion king. This winter I will be practicing a lot more and will be doing many more competitions in the future." -Mallory

NALEAH BOYS

12TH GRADE

Naleah is the first WCA student to receive a 36 on the ACT! Here is a little more about Naleah: "I am 17 years old and live in Janesville, WI. I enjoy stargazing, tinkering in the workshop, and reading - I have a science library of over 160 books! I published my first nonfiction book, The Concise History of NASA Manned Missions. Recently, my dad and I were asked to help write a user’s manual for the Afterglow Access software (on idata.org). Currently, there are five of us working on completing this task. I attended the Advanced Space Academy this summer on full academic scholarship earning my first science college credit and winning the Commander’s Cup award. My ultimate dream is to become an aerospace engineer for NASA in mission control. I hope to be in the room when the first human steps foot on Mars. Go Mars Generation!" -Naleah
